TEN WAYS TO ANNOY A WRITER (AND MAYBE A TEACHER OR TWO)

murielldubois

This blog post is brought to you by an advertisement I recently read in our local newspaper. The person placing the ad probably didn’t realize his/her error, but shouldn’t someone in the editorial department have helped out?

Anyway, I got to thinking about mistakes I frequently see on-line or hear people say. Here are some of my "favorites". (Notice the sarcasm associated with the italics).

1. The ad: Puppy’s For Sale

Puppy’s what? Ears? Tails? Good nature? Belonging to = ’s.

Puppies=plural

2. What have I got to loose?

Loose rhymes with moose, not choose. Should be: What have I got to lose.

3. Your never going to convince me to go their.

Meaning “You are never…” so should be: You’re

Ah, and the confusion of there (in that place), their (belonging to), and they’re (short for they are).

4. I should of went to the game.

Should’ve sounds like “should of” but it’s short for should have so it’s a contraction.

Went is also wrong: I should’ve gone...

5. I love alot of pepperoni on my pizza.

Do you like alittle cheese, too? Separate “a lot.”

6. I love pepperoni to!

To…what? Sing? Dance? Taste good?

When meaning “also” use too.

7. She’s taller then me.

Remember: then=when. Than=comparison.

8. Who’s coat is this?

In your mind try: “Who is coat is that?”

Doesn’t work? Use whose. (Tricky because ‘s can mean belonging to.)

9. I didn’t do nothing wrong!

Ahh…the double negative!!!

Two choices: I did nothing wrong, or I didn’t do anything wrong.

10. Your problem doesn’t effect me.

(Should be affect because it doesn’t change anything. Can you substitute the word change?)

Need a hint? Similar to then and than: Effect=end (or result). Affect=action, change
